Clove (Syzygium aromaticum)

Benefits: Asthma, chest infections, colic, diarrhea, general exhaustion, flu, flatulence, indigestion, insect repellent (mosquitoes and moths), muscle pain, nausea, ringworm, scabies, sprains, stale breath, tired limbs, toothache, ulcers, wounds. Clove oil is high in eugenol. This constituent gives this oil analgesic properties which makes it useful for toothaches. The anti-inflammatory action of this oil helps with insect bites and reduces the swelling.
Of Interest: In older days it was thought that you could not walk near Clove trees while wearing a hat because the tree would become frightened and would no longer bear fruit.
Eucalyptus(Eucalyptus globulus)

Eucalyptus is often added to inhalations, oils, and ointments for respiratory infections and congestion. Of Interest: The word eucalyptus is derived from Greek meaning "well covered". This refers to part of the calyx that initially covers the flower.

Benefits: Acne, allergies, amenorrhea, asthma, athlete’s foot, bruises, colds, cough, dandruff, depression, dermatitis, earache, eczema, flatulence, headache, hypertension, indigestion, infection, inflammations, insect bites and stings, laryngitis, migraine, nausea, nervous tension, neuralgia, psoriasis, rashes, rheumatism, scars, slow digestion, sore muscles, sprains, stress, sunburn, teething, toothache, ulcers, wound. Spike lavender can be added to any fragrance blend. This oil has a strong camphor aroma, and will affect the blend differently than true lavender.
Of Interest: Spike lavender grows naturally at low altitudes, and true lavender goes naturally at high altitudes. This difference in growing conditions accounts for the camphor that is found in Spike lavender and not in the other. Where the growing conditions of these two types of lavender meet, you can find a wide variety of lavender hybrids.

Of Interest: Lemons are harvested while they are still green to yield a higher quality oil. It takes over 3,000 lemons to produce 1 kilo (2.2 lbs) of expressed oil.

If you prefer the aroma of lemongrass, it is a good substitute for citronella in a bug repellant blend.
Lime(Citrus aurantifolia)

Benefits: Acne, anemia, arthritis, asthma, boils, brittle nails, bronchitis, colds, corns, cuts, dyspepsia, fever, flu, infection, insect bites, liver pain, mouth ulcers, nosebleeds, oily skin, poor circulation, rheumatism, stomach cramps, varicose veins, warts. Lime oil can be used in any blend you would add lemon oil to. The aroma is more tart but still very refreshing.
Of Interest: In folklore Lime oil is believed to cleanse and renew the spirit and mind.
Sweet Orange (Citrus sinensis)

Of Interest: It is a traditional Chinese symbol of good luck and prosperity. The orange tree was taken to the West Coast of America by Franciscan monks, who began the cultivation of it there.

Of Interest: Known as one of the seven polyvalents (effective against many toxins), which are applicable to many ailments. According to Greek mythology the genus Mentha takes its name from the nymph Minthe who was seduced by Pluto and turned into a plant by his jealous wife, who trod Minthe into the ground. Pluto, however, turned her into an herb, knowing people would then appreciate Minthe for years to come. Traditionally classified as a Visionary Herb, mint was thought not only to uplift the Spirit, but also to bring dreams of prophecy. Mint was dedicated to the Ancient Greeks to Zeus, the king of the gods.

Of Interest: To the ancient Greeks and Romans the plant was sacred, symbolic of loyalty, death, and remembrance, as well as scholarly learning. At weddings and important occasions, wherever solemn vows were made, garlands and headdresses of rosemary were worn, as an emblem of trust and constancy. The tragic Ophelia said, “There’s rosemary, that’s for remembrance”. The plant was also thought to bring good luck, and to impart protection against magic and witchcraft. “Seethe much Rosemary,” advised William Langham (1597), “and bathe therein to make thee lusty, lively, joyful, likeing and youngly”. Rosemary was dedicated by the Ancient Greeks to the solar deity of Apollo, the god of medicine, music, poetry, and prophecy.

Of Interest: Because the water-resistant “paperbark” is so easy to peel off the tree, it was used extensively by the aboriginal peoples of Australia to make small canoes, knife sheaths, and thatching for shelters. The pungent leaves were soaked in hot water and taken as a cure for cold coughs, and headaches – or they were simply picked from the tree and chewed. In World War ll cutters and producers of tea tree were exempt from military service until enough essential oil had been accumulated. It was issued to each soldier and sailor for them to treat tropical infections and other problems of warfare, including wounds.
